Emergency 10" Fire Water Main Repair in Hodges, SC
Mathis Plumbing Co. & Heating Co was contacted on the Wednesday between Christmas and New Years concerning a major leak at SPF North America Pet Food Plant in Hodges, SC. The leak was in the plant’s 10” water main that supplies water to the Fire Protection System. Upon arriving, Mathis’s crew found the line leaking so bad, it needed to be cut off. The 10” fire main runs under a large thick concrete pad. It was decided that the concrete needed to be cut so line excavation could be performed to expose piping so leak location and needed materials could be obtained.
Mathis’s Crew was informed that the plant would have to be shut down until the broken fire main could be repaired and restored. Excavation of ditch was done after a concrete ditch section was sawed cut and removed.
A material list was made and the needed pipe, fittings, mechanical joints was located and another Mathis crew traveled to Greenville, SC to a local Industrial Supply House to pick up. Everything was going according to plan until the next evening it was determined that additional materials were needed. Mathis made another trip the next day to pick up the additional mechanical joint fittings.
The crews worked until mid-night or longer for two days in a row, determined to complete the needed repairs so plant operation could be restored. Once repairs were completed and fire line was pressure tested, Mathis arranged for concrete to be re-poured and finished. Plant Management and their personnel were very grateful that their operation was restored so quickly.
